ABOUT US
THE HISTORY OF UNION
The Composers Union of Armenia (CUA) has been operating for about 80 years. The first chairman of CUA was musicologist Mushegh Aghayan /1935/. However, a study of history shows that CUA began its activities back in 1932. However, at that time, instead of the chairman, there was an executive secretary. Samson Gasparyan was appointed to this position. Turning to Mushegh Aghayan, we note that Ghazaros Aghayan’s son did not lead CUA for very long, and Haro Stepanyan took his place.
Since 1948, Ashot Satian was appointed chairman of CUA, and Alexander Tadevosyan was appointed executive secretary. In 1950, during Ashot Satyan’s leadership, Edward Mirzoyan became executive secretary of CUA.
1953-1957 Grigor Yeghiazaryan was the head of CUA, then Ghazaros Saryan, and since 1957, when the chairman was not appointed but elected, Edward Mirzoyan began to lead CUA. It was during the reign of the famous Armenian composer, thanks to his enormous efforts, that the creative house of composers was built in Dilijan, and the good reputation of the Armenian school of composition became even more accessible not only within the Soviet Union, but also beyond its borders.
In 1991, 55-year-old Robert Amirkhanyan was elected chairman of CUA, who led CUA for 22 years. In the elections held in October 2013, Aram Satyan was elected chairman of CUA.
The new chairman of CUA set himself the goal of creating a strong family consisting of representatives of the older and younger generations, as well as talented Armenian composers living abroad. Based on the great responsibility and dedication to the duties assumed, Aram Satian is confident that in the coming years the high rating of CUA, and indeed of Armenian professional music in the world, will be restored. And in all this, the role and active work of each of us is important.
