BIOGRAPHY

1919-1920 – piano (prof: K. Aduralova), music theory and composition (prof: A. Ter-Ghevondyan) departments at the Tiflis Conservatory

1923 – Moscow Gnessin State Musical College (composition class of M. Gnessin)

1926-1930 – composition department at the Leningrad Conservatory (prof. V. Shcherbakov)

Since 1930 – permanently settled in Yerevan

Since 1920 – teacher in Sanahin, Alexandropol

1927-1929 – participated in the folk music collection campaign organized by K. Kushnarian. In different regions of Armenia, especially in Shirak, they collected more than 350 armenian and kurdish melodies. “That original campaign helped me to get to know the unique beauty of my homeland more deeply,” said Stepanyan. “Many of my later works were born under the influence of the impressions I received in those days, in particular in my song “Hey, Aragats”, which is written in the style of Shirak’s “Sahari”, songs that glorify the morning, the garden, the sun.”
