BIOGRAPHY

Received his initial musical education in the group of gifted children attached to the Yerevan Conservatory. His classmates were A. Babajanyan, E. Mirzoyan, Al. Harutyunyan. Their friendship, which started from school age, continued throughout their lives, becoming the history of the “Armenian Powerful Group”.

Studied at the Yerevan State Conservatory after Komitas (YSCK) (profs. V. Talyan and S. Barkhudaryan)

1934-1938 – studied at the Gnesins music school in Moscow (prof. V. Shebolin)

1945-1950 – studied at the Tchaikovsky State Conservatory in Moscow (prof. D. Kabalevsky, D. Shostakovich, A. Alexandrov)

Since 1950 – YSCK (instrumentation, composition lecturer)

1939 – served into the Soviet Army

1941-1945 – Participant in the World War II

1955-1956 – Chairman of the CUA

1960-1986 – Rector of the YSCK

1963-1967 – Assuming the position of the 1st director, managed the construction of the house-museum of Martiros Saryan and the organization of the first exhibition

Since 1972 – professor at the YSCK

1986-1998 – head of the composition department (among his students: T. Mansuryan, R. Altunyan, R. Sargsyan, S. Lusikyan, V. Achemyan, A. Karapetyan and others)
