BIOGRAPHY

1898 – graduated violin class of I. Grzhimali from the Moscow Conservatory (counterpoint S. Taneev)

1905-1906 – Studied in Leipzig (conducting A. Nikish)

Since 1900 – worked as concertmaster at the private Russian Opera Orchestra in Moscow

Since 1908, he has performed as a soloist-violinist in Moscow, played in chamber-instrumental ensembles, conducted violin and musical literacy classes at the folk conservatory, conducted public symphonic concerts in Sokolniki, opera performances at S. Alekseevyan’s house, led the music section of the “Free Theater”.

1918-1919 – conducted symphonic concerts in Saratov, directed the Soviet Opera Theater, taught at the conservatory

1922 – At the invitation of A. Lunacharsky, he moved to Moscow

1922-1924 – Rector of the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts

1922-1935 – Professor of the Moscow Conservatory (led the orchestral, choral, opera departments, taught music-theoretical subjects, score reading). Among the students are G. Budaghyan, L. Ginzburg, M. Paverman, B. Khaikin, T. Timofeev and others.

1927 – performed the works of Soviet composers in Vienna and Prague

Since 1935 – Lived in Yerevan, engaged in multifaceted compositional and organizational activities

1935-1939 – Chief conductor of the Opera and Ballet Theater after A. Spendiaryan.

Since 1941 – Artistic director and chief conductor of the Armenian Symphonic Orchestra

1936-1954 – Rector of the Yerevan State Conservatory after Komitas. Among his students are: A. Katanyan, Y. Davtyan, H. Voskanyan
