BIOGRAPHY

Born in 1906 in the city of Merv. Later, the family moved to Baku, where Satyan joined the ranks of the Red Army

1921-1926 – brass band musician, then band leader (kapellmeister)

1926-1930 – studied at Baku Hayarta music studio (prof: A. Mayilyan)

Since 1930 – Lived in Yerevan

1936 – graduated from the composition (profs: H. Stepanyan, then S. Barkhudaryan, V. Talyan) and conducting (prof: K. Sarajev) departments at the Yerevan State Conservatory after Komitas (YSCK)

1930-1939 – manager and conductor of the music department in the Theater after G. Sundukyan

1939-1947 – managed the music department of “Armkino” studio

1947-1952 – chairman of the Board of the Composers Union of Armenia (CUA), member of the Board of the Composers Union of the USSR

Satyan’s unique style and mastery were formed in the song genre based on the creative assimilation and development of the compositional features of various branches of Armenian monodic music. Satyan’s songs (mostly written with G. Saryan’s poems) are diverse, first of all, in their types and melodic structure: mass song without accompaniment, pop song-romance, songs with choral doublet, duet, chorus, ensemble of folk instruments, folk song and dance, symphonic orchestra. Songs with accompaniment (with a significant role of the instrumental part), songs with mood, narrative, dance, coloratura, etc.
