BIOGRAPHY

1916 – graduated from the natural sciences department of Petrograd University

1925 – graduated from the Leningrad Conservatory

1918-1923 – lecturer at the Tbilisi Music Institute

1925 – lecturer at the Leningrad Conservatory

1927, 1929 – headed scientific expeditions of the Leningrad Theatre and Music Institute to collect folk songs in Armenia

1944-1949 – research fellow and head of the Department of History and Theory of Art of the Academy of Sciences of the ArmSSR, simultaneously lecturer at the Yerevan State Conservatory after Komitas (YSCK)

Kushnaryan studied the stylistic creativity of Renaissance music, developed the doctrines of music scale and polyphony, developed the theory of monody, clarified the origin and development of Armenian music. He continued the provisions of Komitas’s theory, made a significant contribution to the study of Armenian monodic music.
