The 13th Eduard Mirzoyan Republican Competition for Young Composers has concluded. With the support of the RA MESCS and at the initiative of the CUA, 15 young composers under the age of 18 were invited to participate in the competitive stages of the competition, which took place in Yerevan from May 12 to 18.
On May 18, the winners were announced during a gala concert at the Arno Babajanyan Concert Hall. According to the jury’s decision, in the junior group (under 13 years old), Hrachya Ghazaryan (teacher: Arpine Kalinina) received the Special Prize, third place was taken by Adriana Shahinyan (teacher: Gayane Grigoryan) and Arayik Sargsyan (teacher: Nelli Mnatsakanyan), and second place was taken by Artur Grigoryan (teacher: Arpine Kalinina) and Monte Mikaelyan (teacher: Nelli Mnatsakanyan). In the senior group (14 to 18 years old), third place was taken by Grigor Khachaturyan (teacher: Arpine Kalinina), and third place by Norayr Nikoghosyan (teacher: Ashot Ghazaryan). The jury declared two winners in the senior group: Victoria Ulikhanyan (teacher: Mikhail Kokzhaev) and Garik Harutyunyan (teacher: Ashot Ghazaryan). All participants were awarded diplomas and incentive gifts, while the top-place finishers also received personalized cups and cash prizes. An additional prize was also awarded to the competition winners: choreographic images based on their work will be staged by the end of the year. Incidentally, this was the first time in the history of youth composition projects that a choreographic element was introduced. During the evening, the audience was treated to the choreographic image “Nightmare,” based on the work of last year’s laureates Gagik Avetisyan and Garik Harutyunyan, performed by students of the Cadance Studio (artistic director: Asatur Kalashyan) and soloist Karen Khachatryan.
A concert in Ashtarak is coming up, and, by decision of the competition’s organizing committee, all participants will be able to participate.
It’s worth noting that the jury included renowned musicians, including Aram Satyan, Chairman of the Armenian Composers’ Union; People’s Artist of the Republic of Armenia Martin Vardazaryan; Honored Artists of the Republic of Armenia Ruben Asatryan, Eduard Hayrapetyan, Narine Zarifyan, and Anna Asatryan; and the competition’s artistic director, Edmond Makaryan.
