FOUR DECADES IN MUSICOLOGY AND PUBLISHING: GOAR SHAGOYAN: “THE MUSICAL TRIANGLE”

This year, musicologist and publisher Gohar Shagoyan celebrates 40 years of professional activity. She devoted ten of those years to teaching, and the last three decades had spent as an editor and publisher. Her work primarily focuses on the development of Armenian musicological thought and its systematic presentation.

One of Shagoyan’s key initiatives is the journal “Musical Armenia”, founded 25 years ago and now considered a key platform in Armenian musical life. During this time, she also founded the Yerevan State Conservatory Publishing House and the monthly journal “Musician,” which have contributed to both the dissemination of professional thought and the recognition of young composers.

In 2017, Shagoyan embarked on a new initiative, founding the journal “Armenian Composer,” published by the Composers’ Union of Armenia. This journal is particularly important for presenting and analyzing contemporary creative processes. It includes both musicological articles and annotations of new works by composers. Another significant achievement of Shagoyan’s publishing work is the scholarly periodical collection “The Creative Palette of Armenian Composers in the Modern World,” published in 2023. This publication is not only a scholarly resource but also an important source for the international perception of contemporary Armenian music.

In addition to periodicals, Shagoyan initiated and published a number of textbooks and research manuals. Her work aims to ensure the availability of materials necessary for musicological education and, at the same time, to raise the level of scholarly study of Armenian music.

Gohar Shagoyan’s name is associated with the further development of Armenian musicological thought and the creation of a publishing system. Her forty-year career spans educational, scientific, and publishing fields. Today, she continues her work, constantly expanding and strengthening the field where Armenian music is presented as a cultural asset worthy of study and recognition.
