Kara-Murza was the first to establish polyphonic singing in the history of Armenian music. Thanks to his efforts, the development of the folk song in the last decade of the century was achieved separately. Kara-Murza was also a good educator. He helped young musicians, trained and educated choir directors. Kara-Murza was also a public speaker. the articles present his progressive, artistic advice.
Getting acquainted with the level of culture of his native people, who lived at that time, the problems standing on the way to the development of music became clear for Kara-Murza. It was necessary to introduce the people to the treasures of world music. To do this, four-part singing, regular concert life was necessary. A song list and choral literature were also needed. Kara-Murza decides to devote himself completely to it. In order to achieve his goal, he had to establish himself in one of the main points of the Armenian culture of that time. One was Constantinople, the other Tiflis. Kara-Murza chose Tiflis because it was closer to Armenia. In 1882, he moved to Tiflis. Intellectuals welcomed him with sincere enthusiasm. Soon we managed to organize the four-part choir and give the first concert of the Armenian polyphonic song. It was in 1885, which, as a historical event, entered the history of Armenian music. The choir had compositions for males, consisted of 15 people and performed in national costume. The concert was an exceptional success.
Thus began the activity of Kara-Murza, which lasted until the end of his life. According to contemporaries, Kara-Murza was like a traveling school. In every city and village, Kara-Murza organized a four-part choir and trained choirmasters. He arranged the work in such a way that the choir continued after his departure. Kara-Murza from wealthy families used to gather to see young people with pensions to study in Russian and European conservatories and receive professional education.
It was not less important that Kara-Murza popularise the Armenian language.
His activity mainly was music-social work, he also gave several private lessons at the same time, and spent not much time for composing.
Kara-Murza collected and developed folk and Gusan songs.
Opera “Shushan” (Lily) occupies its unique place in his heritage. The material of the opera was taken from the tragedy “Shushan” by the novelist Atrpet. It was the first attempt to create an opera among Eastern Armenians.
Kara-Murza has also done enlightening work. He was the special music correspondent for “Mshak” newspaper and wrote music-critical articles.
