Composer, choirmaster and pedagogue

Received education at the parish school of his birthplace, then at the Etchmiadzin Heritage College, studying with N. Tashchyan
1872 – graduated from Etchmiadzin Heritage College
1878 – Studied at the St. Petersburg Conservatory to improve the profession (prof: N. Rimsky-Korsakov)
1888 – graduated from the St. Petersburg Conservatory with a diploma of a freelance artist
Under the guidance of musicologist and composer N. Tashchyan, he practiced Armenian notation for 2 years, participated in the recording of spiritual songs and the publication of collections that have great scientific and artistic value
1874 – Gevorgyan Seminary (teacher)
From 1874 – Gevorgian Seminary (teacher of vocal and theory of Armenian church music)
1877-1891 – lived in Saint Petersburg
1888 – St. Catherine’s Armenian Church (head of Liturgy Reader)
1891 – Nersisyan School in Tiflis (music teacher and choir director)
From 1891-1902 – lived in Tiflis and taught at the Nersisyan School, where created a men’s choir.
1893-1894 – Tiflis department of the Russian Imperial Music Society School (lecturer and rector)
Among his students at the Nersisyan school and later, were: Komitas, T. Nalbandian, A. Shahmuradyan, Sh. Talyan, M. Aghayan, A. Ter-Hovhannisyan, A. Mayilian, A. Manukyan and others
1892 – “Patarag” (Liturgy): for choir a capella. Later, was highly valued by composers F. Liszt, K. Saint-Saens and others
1895 – By the suggestion of Archbishop Gevorg Surenyants, with the paternal kontakion of Catholicos of All Armenians Khrimyan Hayrik, “Patarag” was officially accepted by the Armenian Church
He has developed dozens of national, folk, troop songs, hymns, among which are:
